Martha's Vineyard Escort — The Island I Haven't Visited Yet But Already Love ⚓

I have never been to Martha's Vineyard. This feels like a personal failing I intend to correct.
I lived in Manhattan. I know the crowd that summers on this island - I worked alongside them, dined near them and understood instinctively the particular energy of people who choose an island over a Hamptons house because they value genuine escape over being seen escaping. I never made the trip myself.
This is, frankly, unacceptable. 😄
Martha's Vineyard has lived in my imagination for years - the harbors, the boats, the architecture, the particular quality of light on a New England island in summer. I am manifesting this trip with considerable determination. And I would very much like company when it finally happens.
The Architecture. 🏛️
I am an interior designer. I have spent my entire career in deep, genuine love with architecture - the way buildings speak to their landscape, the way a facade tells you everything about the people who built it and the era that shaped them.
Martha's Vineyard would stop me in my tracks. Completely.
Oak Bluffs is home to the famous Gingerbread Cottages - a neighborhood of tiny Victorian fantasy houses painted in extraordinary colors that look like they escaped from a fairy tale and decided to stay. Pastel pinks, mint greens, butter yellows, all trimmed in ornate wooden lacework called gingerbread. There is genuinely nothing else like it in America.
Edgartown offers a completely different conversation - pristine white captain's houses lining perfectly kept streets, formal New England elegance that has barely changed in two centuries. The architecture of people who built ships and sailed the world and came home to build houses that announced their success without shouting about it.
As an interior designer I could spend days simply walking and looking. That alone would justify the trip. 😊
The Water. 🛥️
I love anything on, in or near the water. Always have.
Martha's Vineyard is surrounded by it - the Atlantic on one side, Vineyard Sound on the other, harbors and inlets and beaches in every direction. Edgartown Harbor is one of the most beautiful working harbors on the East Coast - wooden docks, sailboats at anchor, the smell of salt air and diesel and possibility. 🌊
Menemsha is a working fishing village on the western tip of the island - weathered grey shingles, lobster traps stacked on the docks, boats coming in with the day's catch. Authentic in a way that resort towns rarely manage.
And the beaches. South Beach with its Atlantic surf. The calmer waters of Vineyard Haven Harbor. The extraordinary light on the water in the late afternoon that New England is famous for.
I want to be on a boat in that harbor. I want to feel that particular Atlantic breeze. I want to sit somewhere with a glass of something excellent and watch the boats come in. 🛥️😊
Getting There. ✈️
Part of what makes Martha's Vineyard so special is that getting there requires intention.
You cannot simply drive up. The island is accessible only by ferry from Cape Cod or by small plane into Martha's Vineyard Airport. That deliberate separation from the mainland is part of the experience - the ferry crossing announces that you have properly arrived somewhere worth arriving at.
From Salt Lake City, fly into Boston or Providence and make your way to the Cape. The journey becomes part of the story. ✓
The Energy of the Place. 💙
Martha's Vineyard attracts a very specific kind of person - one who has chosen an island over the mainland deliberately and permanently.
Old money families who have been coming for generations. Creative people. Intellectuals. People who value genuine beauty, genuine quiet and the particular luxury of a place that remains stubbornly, beautifully itself regardless of trends.
I know this crowd. I understand this crowd. And the combination of extraordinary architecture, beautiful water and genuine discretion makes Martha's Vineyard exactly the kind of destination I was built for. 😊
The Logistics. ✈️
Flying in: Boston Logan or Providence, then ferry from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs. Or fly directly into Martha's Vineyard Airport on a regional carrier. From Salt Lake City: Connect through Boston. ✓ Staying: The Edgartown Inn or Harbor View Hotel for classic New England luxury on the water. Best time: July and August for peak season. June and September for the same beauty with fewer crowds. Notice: Two weeks minimum. Summer books out fast. ✓
One Last Thing. ⚓
There is a harbor I have not yet sat beside. A gingerbread cottage I have not yet stopped to admire properly. A ferry crossing I have not yet made.
I intend to make all of them. Soon. And the right company will make every single one of them better.
Come find the island with me. 🌊💙
