Any Boat Will Do — A Utah Boating Companion Gets Honest About Life on the Water 🌊

"Darling it's better, down where it's wetter..." 🧜♀️

I have always been drawn to the water. On it, in it, beside it — there is something about the combination of sun, salt air and open horizon that makes everything feel exactly right. The ocean breeze does something to me that I can't entirely explain. It makes me feel fabulous. It lights my fire. 🔥
And yes, I will absolutely be humming The Little Mermaid for the rest of this post. You're welcome.
A Boating Date Doesn't Require a Superyacht
Let me say this upfront because it matters: you do not need a 200-foot superyacht to have an extraordinary day on the water with the right companion.
A sailboat on a calm lake. A powerboat at sunset. A catamaran rocking gently in a quiet cove. A pontoon with good music and cold drinks. Any of these — with the right person beside you — is an experience worth savoring.
The water is the great equalizer. Nobody cares about square footage when the sun is setting over the water and the conversation is genuinely good.
What makes a boating date extraordinary isn't the size of the vessel. It's the company. 💛
What I Actually Love on the Water
Let me paint you a picture of my ideal water day. ☀️
We spend the day on the water — swimming, maybe wake boarding, wave runners if they're available, or simply lounging on the deck working on my tan and absorbing what I like to call my daily Vitamin D requirements. 😄 The ocean breeze in my hair. Sun warm on my skin. Nowhere to be. Nothing to check.
As the afternoon winds down I freshen up — because yes, even on a boat, a girl has standards 😄 — and we head to dinner on land. Something wonderful. Good food, great wine, the kind of conversation that happens naturally after a day spent genuinely enjoying each other's company.
Or we do it in reverse — dinner first, sunset cruise after. Either way works beautifully.
Activities I'm genuinely enthusiastic about:
⛵ Sailing on calm water
🚤 Power boating on lakes and bays
🛥️ Catamaran days
🤿 Scuba diving from a boat — this is my element
🌊 Wave runners
🏄 Wake boarding
☀️ Deck lounging, sunbathing, doing absolutely nothing productive
A gentle sunset cruise is one of the most romantic experiences available to a human being. I will never say no to one.
The Honest Part 🤢
Here's where I earn your trust by telling you something that does not make me look glamorous.
I get seasick in rough water. Genuinely, memorably, embarrassingly seasick.
Exhibit A: A sailboat to St Barts. Open ocean. Rough seas. Threw up.
Exhibit B: Deep sea fishing in Hawaii. Rough water. Threw up.
Exhibit C: Deep sea fishing in Mexico. Rough water. Threw up.
Three strikes and I have made my peace with this particular limitation. 😄
That said — I have cracked the seasickness code when the adventure is worth it. In Kaikoura, New Zealand, I was determined to scuba dive with wild dusky dolphins 🐬 — one of the rarest and most extraordinary ocean experiences on earth. My preparation was thorough:
🫚 Empty stomach before boarding 🍵 Ginger and peppermint tea to settle things beforehand 💊 Scopolamine patch behind the ear 🤝 Wrist acupressure bands
Result: one of the few people on that boat who did NOT end up hurling over the side. 😄 Victory. Completely worth it.
So if the adventure is extraordinary enough, I will prepare accordingly. But I'd rather spend that energy on a calm lake with cold drinks and good company than on pharmaceutical intervention in rough seas.
Calm lakes? Completely fine. Gentle coastal cruising? Wonderful. Protected bays and harbors? Perfect. Open ocean in rough conditions? I will be the least glamorous person on that boat and we will both regret it.
This means I am genuinely better suited for: ✅ Lake boating — Utah has gorgeous ones ✅ Protected coastal waters ✅ Calm day sailing ✅ Sunset harbor cruises ✅ Day trips rather than multi-day liveaboards
And genuinely not suited for: ❌ Deep sea fishing in choppy conditions ❌ Multi-day ocean passages ❌ Anything that makes seasoned sailors look nervous
I tell you this not to limit the adventure but to ensure it's actually enjoyable for both of us. An honest companion is a better companion. 💛
The Perfect Boating Date Structure
In my experience the ideal water date looks something like this:
Morning: Board the boat, settle in, head out onto the water. Music, sunshine, whatever water activities suit the day — wake boarding, scuba, wave runners, or simply drifting with nowhere to be.
Afternoon: Peak sun hours on the deck. This is where the Vitamin D absorption happens. 😄 Snacks, cold drinks, good conversation. The kind of afternoon that makes you forget what day it is.
Evening: As the sun gets lower the magic really begins. A sunset dinner on the boat — or head to shore for dinner somewhere wonderful. Good food, great wine, the kind of conversation that happens naturally after a day spent genuinely enjoying each other's company.
Simple. Perfect. Repeatable. 💛
Where the Water Takes Us
Some of the most beautiful boating destinations happen to overlap perfectly with the places I already love and travel to:
Lake Tahoe 💎 — arguably the most stunning lake in America. Crystal clear water, mountain backdrop, warm summer days. A boat day on Tahoe is genuinely one of life's great experiences.
Utah lakes 🏔️ — stunning mountain lakes right in my backyard. Underrated and beautiful.
Jackson Lake, Wyoming ⛰️ — dramatic Teton views from the water. Extraordinary.
Idaho lakes 🌲 — gorgeous, uncrowded and completely underappreciated.
Coastal California 🌊 — Santa Barbara, San Diego, the Channel Islands. Protected waters, incredible scenery.
Hawaii 🌺 — where I've done some of my best scuba diving. From a boat. In calm conditions. Very much not deep sea fishing. 😄
The Caribbean 🌴 — St Barts is on my list for a return visit. Under better sea conditions this time.
European river cruises 🇪🇺 — the Danube, the Rhine, the Seine. And between you and me — my German would come in very handy for some of those stops along the way. 😊
A Note on Yachts and Bucket List Adventures 🛥️
A proper yacht is absolutely on my bucket list. I'll be honest about that too. The idea of a beautiful vessel, calm waters, a stunning destination — yes please.
Also on the bucket list: a river cruise. Not the giant floating resort kind — but the intimate kind where you stop in charming towns, explore local culture, eat extraordinary food and wake up somewhere new each morning. The Danube. The Rhine. The Seine. The kind of travel that feels like discovery rather than tourism. That one is firmly on the list. 💛
Speaking of which — large ocean cruises. I've been on them. They can be fun in their own way. But between the crowds, the organized excursions and the general tourist-trap energy, I'll save those for my senior years when I'm ready to embrace the buffet line and the matching luggage tags. 😂 For now I prefer my adventures a little more curated and a little less... scheduled.
But a private yacht? A river barge through the French countryside? Absolutely. Whenever you're ready. 😊
I've had some of my best water days on modest boats with genuinely interesting people. The vessel matters far less than the company, the conditions and the intention behind the day.
If you have a yacht, wonderful. If you have a pontoon on a beautiful lake, equally wonderful. If you're somewhere in between, perfect.
Any boat will do. With the right companion. 💛
