Somewhere between Mt. Bachelor and dinner downtown. This is called research. 🍷☀️

There is a city in central Oregon that I have never visited. This is not for lack of opportunity. It is not for lack of interest. It is entirely because every single person who has been there will not stop talking about it and I have been attempting to manage my expectations accordingly.

It is not working. 😂

Bend, Oregon has been on my bucket list for longer than I care to admit. Every acquaintance who returns from a trip there has the same look — slightly sun-kissed, suspiciously relaxed and completely insufferable about how wonderful it was. Athletes. Skiers. Outdoor enthusiasts. Sophisticated travelers who know the difference between a destination that tries hard and one that simply is.

They all say the same thing: Bend is something special. 🏔️

What Everyone Keeps Telling Me

Up and coming — but not in the way that means it hasn't arrived yet. Bend has arrived. It just hasn't gotten loud about it. The kind of place that rewards people who find it before the crowds do, which means the crowds have already found it and somehow it still feels undiscovered. That's a rare trick.

Beautiful scenery — and from what I can gather this is an almost embarrassing understatement. Smith Rock State Park alone looks like a landscape painting someone forgot to tell was real. Dramatic volcanic rock formations rising from the high desert, the Crooked River winding below, golden light at dusk. I have seen the photos. I understand the fuss completely. ☀️

Sunshine — and this is the part that surprises people. Bend sits on the eastern side of the Cascades, sheltered from the rain that defines the rest of Oregon's reputation. The result is over 250 days of sunshine per year. In Oregon. The Pacific Northwest. This feels like a geographical loophole and I intend to take full advantage of it. ☀️

Mt. Bachelor

If you ski — and I do — Mt. Bachelor is the reason Bend makes the list immediately. One of the finest ski mountains in the Pacific Northwest, with over 4,300 acres, genuine vertical and the kind of terrain that rewards skiers who actually ski rather than those who prefer to be photographed doing so. ⛷️

I ski blues confidently and have been known to wander onto blacks when the conditions are right and my judgment is slightly impaired by altitude and enthusiasm. Mt. Bachelor seems like exactly the kind of mountain that would test both. I look forward to finding out.

Smith Rock and the Outdoors

Bend's outdoor credentials are genuinely extraordinary. Smith Rock is world famous among rock climbers and jaw-droppingly beautiful to everyone else. The Deschutes River runs through town — kayaking, fly fishing, paddleboarding — the kind of river that makes you understand why people move somewhere and never leave.

For a certified advanced, rescue and nitrox scuba diver who hula hoops on boulders in the desert — Bend's outdoor menu reads like a very specific kind of heaven. 😄

The Scene

Downtown Bend is walkable, charming and genuinely sophisticated in the way that outdoor towns sometimes manage to be — REI adjacent but also excellent restaurants, proper coffee, good wine and the kind of energy that comes from a population of people who are all deeply satisfied with where they live.

There is also, famously, craft beer. Bend has more craft breweries per capita than almost anywhere in America. I mention this for completeness. 🍺

Sunriver and Brasada Ranch

For those who prefer their outdoor adventure with a luxury resort attached — Sunriver Resort and Brasada Ranch both sit within easy reach of Bend. Golf, spa, proper accommodation, the kind of places where you can spend a morning hiking Smith Rock and an afternoon being pampered without any contradiction whatsoever. ⛳

What a Bend Date Actually Looks Like

Here is what I imagine a Bend date looks like. Morning on Mt. Bachelor — first tracks, cold air, the kind of skiing that reminds you why you started. Afternoon at Smith Rock watching the light change on the rock face while the river catches the last of it below. Dinner somewhere downtown that takes its wine list seriously. The kind of day that starts athletic and ends civilized — which is, frankly, my favorite kind of day.

I have been told this is exactly how Bend works. I intend to verify this personally. 🏔️☀️

The Honest Confession

I have not been to Bend yet. This is a gap in my otherwise reasonably well-traveled life that I intend to correct. The mountain is there. The scenery is there. The sunshine is apparently extraordinary.

And frankly — if one more person comes back from Bend looking that relaxed and that smug about it, I am going to have no choice. 😄

The right invitation would accelerate things considerably. 🏔️✨
