Grasings, Casanova or Vesuvius — the only real question in Carmel. 🍷

There are places in the world that stop you in your tracks.

Not because of what's happening there — because of what isn't. No rush. No noise. No sense that you should be somewhere else or doing something more important. Just the Pacific Ocean, the coastal cliffs, the cypress trees bent permanently sideways by the wind and the particular quiet of a place that has always known exactly what it is.

That is the Carmel and Monterey coast. And I love it completely. 🩵

The Drive 🌊

Let's start with the road. Because the road deserves its own section.

Highway 1 along this stretch of California coast is one of the most extraordinary drives in the world. Two lanes. Sheer cliffs. The Pacific crashing hundreds of feet below. Views that genuinely take your breath away — sometimes at moments when you would really prefer to be focused on the road. 😄

Pay attention. Seriously. One wrong move on certain sections of this drive and you will become a permanent part of the scenery in the most dramatic way possible. The road demands respect and rewards it with views that don't exist anywhere else.

The 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach is its own experience — a privately maintained road through one of the most expensive real estate corridors in California, past the famous Lone Cypress clinging to its rock above the ocean, past golf courses that would make any golfer weak at the knees. Absolutely worth the small entry fee. ✓

Post Ranch Inn — Rich Hippies with Views 🌿

I want to tell you about one of my favorite hotels in the world.

Post Ranch Inn sits on a ridge above Big Sur, with villas positioned right on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Right on the edge. The ocean is not a distant view — it is simply there, below you, in every direction, as far as you can see.

The vibe is what I can only describe as luxury for people who have outgrown the need to perform luxury. Organic, architectural, in deep conversation with the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Rich hippie energy — and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. 😄

The restaurant is extraordinary — the views from the dining room make it genuinely impossible to have a bad meal regardless of what's on the plate. Though the plate is also extraordinary.

There is an outdoor pool tucked into a forest that feels entirely removed from civilization. I went skinny dipping. The forest approved. 🌲😉

If you are looking for somewhere that will make you feel like you are genuinely away from the world — not performing vacation but actually, deeply away — Post Ranch Inn is the answer.

Carmel-by-the-Sea 🛍️

Carmel is the kind of small town that people stumble into and then spend years trying to figure out how to move to.

No chain stores. No traffic lights. Winding streets lined with boutiques, galleries, restaurants and the occasional fairy-tale cottage that looks like it escaped from a different century entirely.

I spent an entire day wandering through the boutique shops looking for unique treasures — which is exactly the right way to experience Carmel. No agenda. No schedule. Just the pleasure of discovering things you didn't know you needed until they were in your hands.

Grasings — a Carmel institution for a reason. Locally sourced, beautifully executed, the kind of meal that makes you want to cancel your plans and stay another night.

Casanova — romantic, intimate, European in spirit. Named after the building's former resident, which tells you everything you need to know about the energy. 😄

Vesuvius — wonderful cocktails in a setting that makes conversation come easily. The right place to end an evening in Carmel.

Monterey 🐠

A short drive north of Carmel, Monterey has its own distinct character — more working waterfront, more history, equally beautiful.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is genuinely one of the best in the world. I say this not as a casual observation but as someone who has visited aquariums on multiple continents. The kelp forest exhibit alone is worth the visit — an enormous tank with natural light filtering down through living kelp, sharks and fish moving through it in their own unhurried way. Deeply calming and genuinely educational. Plan to spend more time than you think you'll need. 🐠

Cannery Row — made famous by John Steinbeck — has evolved from its sardine-canning days into a waterfront lined with restaurants and shops. The ghost of the old working harbor gives it a character that newer developments never quite manage to replicate.

Who Comes Here 🩵

The Carmel and Monterey coast attracts a specific kind of person.

He has been to the flashier destinations and found them wanting. He values beauty over spectacle, authenticity over performance, natural grandeur over manufactured luxury. He chose Post Ranch Inn over a city hotel because he understands the difference between escaping and arriving somewhere.

That is the person I enjoy spending time with most. And this is the landscape that suits us both perfectly. 😊

The Logistics ✈️

Flying in: Monterey Regional Airport is small and charming — limited direct routes but worth checking for convenience. San Jose or San Francisco airports give you more options and a beautiful coastal drive south on Highway 1 to arrive in style.

Duration: Three days minimum to do this coastline justice — Post Ranch Inn for one or two nights, Carmel for wandering, Monterey for the aquarium and the waterfront.

Notice: Two weeks minimum — longer is always better. Post Ranch Inn books well in advance. ✓

One Last Thing

There is a moment at Post Ranch Inn — standing on the cliff edge, the Pacific stretching to the horizon, the wind coming off the water — when the noise of ordinary life becomes genuinely inaudible.

That moment is available to you.

Come find it. 🩵🌊
